CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The morning sky had a strange purplish tinge that I'd never seen before.

I glanced at Koda, who was packing our horses. If he had noticed the strange sky, he hadn't said anything.

"Koda, why is the sky purple like that?" I asked.

Koda looked up, and his eyes widened a little.

"I can't be sure, but other guards used to speak of strange things happening in the Twilight Court. Maybe this is one of them. You should ask Lykos."

I winced at the sound of his name.

"What's wrong?" Koda asked, immediately stopping what he was doing and going to my side.

"Nothing serious," I sighed. "Just, I spoke to Lykos last night, and he doesn't seem to have much faith in me."

Koda frowned.

"Well, the feeling is mutual. I don't trust him, either."

"But we can't act like this. If I'm going to stop my brother, I need him to believe in the cause. He can't just follow me because his Queen said it was the right thing to do."

"Maybe he'll come around," Koda said, not sounding very sure of himself.

My bodyguard put his hand on my shoulder.

"But I know one thing for sure, I trust you, Princess Aria. And I swore I will protect you until my dying breath. I know that you can do this."

Warmth bloomed in my chest.

"Thank you," I said. "It's nice to know I have at least one person in this crazy world I can trust."

"And Pearl back home," Koda said.

I nodded.

"I miss her," I admitted. "I wonder if she'd be able to send fire messages to us?"

Koda shrugged.

"We can only hope she does soon. I worry about her. Your brother knew how close you were."

I bit my lip and said a silent prayer for her. It was all I could do for now.

Once the supply group was back on the trail, I rode up beside Lykos.

"Can I talk to you?" I asked.

"About what?" The dark-haired soldier asked.

"About the sky," I said.

How was no one else concerned about this?

"It's a normal phenomenon when high concentrations of magic form," Lykos said. "Be on your guard, because we might encounter beasts today. There are a lot of things that would love nothing more to kill you and eat you around here."

Gee, great. I thought to myself. Spooky purple sky. Hungry animals. I was glad that I didn't make this trip by myself.

I slowed my pace to rejoin Koda.

"What did he say?" Koda asked.

"High magic concentration. Be alert because we might get attacked by hungry creatures," I said.

"Super," Koda said with a sarcastic sigh.

"Hopefully we make it to the village before that," I said.

How could people live out here without the projection of high walls? It was insanity.

The sky grew darker as we went further east. The magic rippled through the air, biting at my skin like static. The horses became uneasy but moved forward with a little prodding.

"I don't like this," I whispered.

Koda nodded. He stood up in his stirrups, peering into the distance. The ground ahead of us was completely flat, and we could make out the silhouette of a small village.
